RYTHIM

2016 | Prato, Tuscany, Italy

Program: police station with civic facilities

The project is based on the concept of Rythim, so having a strong grid reinforces it.

The primary lines were established according to the surrounding buildings, then applied to the blocks openings, floor patterns and roof design. These grid lines create a sense of continuity, a type of “wave”that starts from the floor until it reaches the roof, from all four buildings.

After a pattern study of the surroundings, a new palette was developed for Prato’s new police station. The use of concrete highlights the fact that it’s a new construction and a new mark on a historical city. However, there’s a connection with the city thru its color palette.

The underground floor is divided between public and private technical sectors, with an underground plaza, coffee shop and public library with easy pedestrian flow. Having civic utilities on a police station approaches the officers to the public, reinforcing the idea that it is a space for the society’s use as much as it is for the agents

With the demand of having well divided public and private floorplans, while still granting easy access to all facilities, an underground level was designed to connect all four volumes as one

The shape of the buildings comes from a reinterpretation of the classic design of old factories, which are a strong part of Prato’s history.
